In 2nd grade, students started to read chapter books, and it became important for them to read frequently to develop stamina and fluency. The best way to encourage this was to introduce them to series books, which captivated them to the extent that as soon as they finished one book, they immediately wanted to read the next in the series. This grant provided a cart and 24 new series books to PR 2nd Grade. It included the procurement of 3 copies of the first four books in each series.

The grant allowed students to access new stories and characters, thereby enhancing the learning and reading activities they were engaged in within the classroom. It expanded learning opportunities by offering more mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors for students to learn from, enriching their educational experience.

The grant was awarded to create a collection of literacy resources aimed at educating on inclusion, accessibility, acceptance, and justice for people with disabilities and differences. It followed up on the previous year’s “Celebration Station” grant, which provided a diverse range of books on different holidays, cultures, and celebrations. The grant sought to enhance the existing collection by adding new books that cover a significant aspect of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) related to disability awareness, ensuring there was no overlap with books already acquired. The project was designed to extend DEI initiatives, assist teachers with more inclusive instruction, challenge oppressive systems for people with disabilities, and enrich the core curriculum by reflecting diverse experiences and perspectives.

A creativity wall was established in the Innovation Lab. The initiative aimed to offer a unique feature distinct from the media center’s LEGO wall. A large magnetic whiteboard was installed, enabling students to map out their projects and utilize a variety of magnetic building toys. This new addition provided a collaborative space where multiple students could work together simultaneously.

The creativity wall served as a tool for students to engage in the Design Process, which includes the stages of Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve, and Communicate, particularly during building challenges. It offered a substantial area for groups to visualize and organize their construction plans. Moreover, the magnetic aspect of the wall allowed students to experiment with building vertically using five different types of magnetic building materials available in the iLab, introducing unique challenges compared to building on a flat surface.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) provides a foundation for safe and positive learning, and enhances students’ ability to succeed in school, careers, and life.

Our project is providing 2 electric KidZone carts with proper postural support for students who have physical impairments, along with our other students who are in the special education program. This project will create an opportunity to engage the students in kinesthetic learning activities such as cause and effect, prepositions ( forward, backward, fast, slow), along with generating excitement which will encourage our students.

Students are currently not allowed to share materials due to the pandemic, which has created a situation where our students need to bring their own materials to the Specials classes. Our young learners have difficulty carrying all of their supplies to class. We would like to supply each student with a bag to carry their supplies, freeing up their hands to carry projects they have created, their iPad or their water bottles when going to PE.
